Steam rises from the dome of Redoubt Volcano in Alaska, as pictured during an August 13, 1990, survey flight.

On March 22, 2009, after almost two months of warning signs, Redoubt began erupting in earnest again. Scientists have so far logged five distinct eruptions.

The 2009 rumblings might not die down any time soon--activity surrounding the 1989-90 eruptions continued for almost five months.
