February 20, 2009--The unstudied forests of Mount Mabu (above, a researchers' camp in fall 2008) are well-known to locals who took refuge on the mountain during Mozambique's civil war.

Yet many Mozambicans outside of the region have ever heard of Mount Mabu, said expedition leader Jonathan Timberlake, a botanist at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.

The organization is working with the Mozambican government to "encourage local people to value the forest for its wildlife," Timberlake said.
