The ruins of buildings and vehicles lie on charred land at Kinglake, northeast of Melbourne, Australia, on February 8, 2009. Nationwide, at least 700 homes were destroyed in Saturday's inferno.

On February 9, Australian police announced that some of the fires may have been due to arson. Each fire death is being considered a possible homicide, vast swaths of Victoria state have been designated as crime scenes, and any suspected arsonists could be tried for murder, according to the New York Times.
