February 9, 2009--A fire truck moves away from out-of-control flames, part of a wildfire about 78 miles (125 kilometers) west of Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday.

As of Monday, fires across Victoria state and other parts of southern Australia have killed at least 166 people and turned whole villages to ash and cinders. (Watch Australia fires video.)

"Hell and all its fury has visited the good people of Victoria in the last 24 hours," Prime Minister Kevin Rudd told reporters yesterday.

The fires were stoked by a long-running drought, high winds, and temperatures as hot as 117 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius)--the worst fire conditions ever known in Australia, experts say.
