Gaza City, Gaza Strip, January 27, 2009--Abdullah Shawwa, 4, who suffers from a kidney tumor the size of a watermelon, is prepped for surgery by a team of U.S. doctors.

Medical workers rushed to the Gaza Strip after Israel ended its war on the territory on January 17. But the Americans found more than war injuries: A 20-month border closing by Egypt and Israel following the Hamas takeover of Gaza had left many residents in need of health care.

After surgery, Shawwa will need chemotherapy or radiation, neither of which is available in Gaza, according to the Associated Press.
