Malbork, Poland, January 13, 2008--The remains of nearly 1,800 Germans were exhumed this month from a mass grave in what was once German East Prussia.

The bones belong to civilians who died in 1945 during the final days of World War II. While several dozen bodies were found with gunshot wounds, Polish officials leading the investigation said they think most victims died of hunger and cold.

The region, once called Marienburg, was turned over to Poland after the war.
