November 26, 2008--Layers of lava are revealed on Mars's' surface in images taken in October by NASA's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera.

(See some of the first color images released last year by HiRISE.)

On the Elysium Planitia region of Mars, near the planet's equator, two distinct types and ages of lava are visible. Darker lava, near the top, is thought to be from a younger flow. The older, lighter, and dustier lava has been whipped into thin dunes, appearing as ripples or stripes.

Volcanic activity on Mars has pocked the landscape with craters and fissure vents (above), from which lava once spewed.
