International Winner, People

A local woman goes about her business in Mozambique.

This shot was honored as the best photo of a person in the National Geographic Society's 2008 International Photography Contest, which was conducted in partnership with 25 local-language editions of National Geographic magazine. (National Geographic News is owned by the National Geographic Society.)

A panel of experts selected winning photographers in categories for people, places, and nature for both international submissions and only those from readers of the English-language edition of the magazine. The images were among a pool of nearly 220,000 entries from around the world.

"This is one of those wonderful moments when everything comes together visually," freelance photojournalist and judge Maggie Steber said of the above photo. "There is a musical rhythm to the image."

Said National Geographic design editor Darren Smith: "The composition is intriguing with the mirroring of the women's bodies. I find it to be very harmonious and soothing."
