Fifth Prize: Prickly Pumpkin Patch?

By stacking 60 images atop one another for this extended-focus photo of a cup plant's pollen grains, Shirley Owens of Michigan State University's Center for Electron Optics took fifth place in the 2008 BioScapes contest.

The bright coloration of the pollen comes from a stain that Owens applied to the grains, which, when illuminated by laser light, shone like porch full of jack-o'-lanterns.
