November 8, 2008--A peaceful-looking swirl from space, Hurricane Paloma (the white circle below the United States) packed sustained wind speeds of 105 miles (165 kilometers) an hour on November 7 when the GOES satellite captured this image.

The swelling storm, which formed off Nicaragua, hit hurricane-weary Cuba with sustained 125-mile-an-hour (200-kilometer-an-hour) winds on November 8.

Though winds and floodwaters destroyed buildings and disrupted services, no deaths were reported during the third hurricane to pummel Cuba this year.
