November 5, 2008--The remains of a violent impact--likely from an asteroid or comet--afford scientists an opportunity to analyze a Martian surface churned up by the blast.

This crater, captured by NASA's HiRISE camera, created a dramatic pattern of fluidized ejecta that may indicate that the impact zone is ice-rich.

Material flowing from the crater's west wall toward its center also suggests that ground ice is present at the location.

Mars's Deuteronilus Mensae region is an otherworldly landscape of hills and mesas that is home to many glacial features.
