Ziarat, Pakistan, October 29, 2008--A young survivor of a 6.4 magnitude earthquake sits near his collapsed home in the southwestern province of Balchuristan. The tremor flattened mud-walled homes, triggered landslides, and left up to 50,000 people homeless. The official death toll is 215.

Activists with hard-line Islamic organizations such as Jamaat-ud-Dawa, designated a terrorist group by the U.S., were the first to reach some of the remote devastated regions with relief supplies, according to the BBC.
