Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, October 28, 2008--U.S. Army soldiers Sgt. James Harris (R) and Kevin Yeatman smoke following a firefight with Taliban insurgents in eastern Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, the site of the heaviest fighting in the war.

The conflict is at its highest pitch since it started in 2001, and U.S. commanders are requesting an additional 20,000 forces to battle a growing Taliban insurgency, according to the Washington Post. Attacks in eastern Afghanistan are up about a third since April.
