Ghardaia, Algeria, October 3, 2008--A man cleans up after torrential rains triggered massive mud flows through this historic oasis in a long narrow valley known as the M'zab about 370 miles (595 kilometers) south of Algiers.

The flooding killed at least 41 people in the usually arid region on the edge of the Sahara, the world's largest desert. A local river rose 26 feet (eight meters), and mud flowed chest deep in some streets, according to the Associated Press.
