Jerusalem, Israel, October 8, 2008--A family prays together at the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, before the beginning of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Yom Kippur is a day of atonement, when observant Jews fast and pray in synagogues as they seek forgiveness for their sins of the past year.

During the holiday Israel comes to a near standstill. Driving is frowned upon and TV and radio stations go off the air.
