Macambo, a cousin of the cacao, bears a veiny, green pod full of flat, rounded seeds the size of poker chips.

Residents of Peru's Pacaya Samiria National Reserve cultivate macambo near their homes, developing bigger and better varieties as they do with many forest fruits.

In Peruvian cities like Iquitos, vendors roast and skewer its crunchy seeds, which taste somewhat like peanuts. Bark from the macambo tree is used in folk remedies.
