Masaya, Nicaragua, October 24, 2008--A costumed celebrant lights up the night during the San Jeronimo Festival.

Saint Jerome is the city's patron saint, and he's celebrated each year with a raucous festival highlighted by a joyful procession.

A small statue of the saint is placed on a huge platform, simulating a mountain to which Jerome once retreated. The image is then carried through the streets by dozens of men--and followed by throngs of dancing celebrants.
