The overtouristed icon of the American West has received the third worst rating in National Geographic's 2008 "Places Rated" Destination Stewardship survey. Expert judges are asked to evaluate the qualities that make a destination unique.

The town's ignorance of its history is a "disaster," one expert said. Another added: It "looks more like a tacky movie set than a town of any real historic value."
