The culture of the Amish people is lost "amid the sprawl and schlock" of built-up tourist towns in Lancaster, experts say, earning it a tie for fourth worst historic rating in National Geographic's 2008 "Places Rated" Destination Stewardship survey.

"Why can we not celebrate a historic area without making cheap junk shops, especially when the local handicrafts are of such excellent quality?" asked one of the experts on the international panel.
