WORST RATED HISTORIC SITES

Deadwood, South Dakota

A street in Deadwood, South Dakota, is deserted at nighttime.

Once a famous gathering place for renegades of the Wild West, the town has now become "hokey and relatively unpleasant," National Geographic's 2008 "Places Rated" Destination Stewardship survey said. The long-time gambling town tied for fourth worst in the annual ranking.

"Maybe [it's] just a modern version of what it has always been," one expert said, "a place for rubes to drop a few bucks."
