Nikko Historic Areas, Japan

Ryuzuno-taki Falls flow downhill through Nikko, a large mountain park containing a religious temple.

The "especially beautiful" Japanese park, with its well-protected historic buildings, was named fourth best in National Geographic's 2008 "Places Rated" Destination Stewardship survey.

The judges--who are asked to measure "the integrity of a place"--were impressed by Nikko's manicured gardens, as well as the warm welcome of the monks.
