Rideau Canal Corridor, Ontario

Starting in historic Ottawa (above), the Rideau Canal Corridor--circa 1832--winds 126 miles (203 kilometers) to Lake Ontario.

A panel of experts voted the World Heritage site second best on the 2008 "Places Rated" Destination Stewardship survey, announced this week by the National Geographic Society's Center for Sustainable Destinations.

A panel of 280 experts deemed the canal highly authentic, and one expert observed "very good harmony between the canal, managed surroundings at locks, and natural environment."
