An outhouse sits perilously on the edge of a mountain in Central City, Colorado.

The 19th-century mining boomtown earned the label of worst historic destination in National Geographic's 2008 "Places Rated" Destination Stewardship survey.

A panel of experts unanimously agreed that the the town had lost its character and culture "amid the noise of slot machines."

"Since the casinos have moved in, historical integrity has moved out," added one expert.
