Paris, France, October 18, 2008--Conservationists placed 1,600 papier-mache pandas on Paris's Trocadero esplanade to raise awareness that only 1,600 of the iconic species are left on Earth and to encourage people to reverse the deterioration of natural resources.

The display was put together by the World Wildlife Fund and the population estimate is based on their most recent survey. The IUCN lists pandas as endangered. Habitat destruction remains the primary threat to the bamboo-eating bears.
