Dover, England, September 11, 2008--Traffic backed up into Dover after a fire in the Channel Tunnel closed the railroad link between England and France.

Between 300 and 400 trains a day normally ferry cars, trucks, and passengers through the tunnel beneath the English Channel. Traffic is currently at a third those levels, forcing many passengers to seek alternatives.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Thirty-two people on board the train were safely evacuated; some reported minor injuries.
