Lisbon, Portugal, September 23, 2008--A Lisbon schoolgirl is ready to explore the world of technology with her new Magellan computer, one of 5,000 handed-out on September 23.

Portugal's socialist government is subsidizing 500,000 of the low-cost computers, which are targeted to children aged 6 to 11.

By offering Magellans to schools at a discount rate of just 50 euros ($73), the government hopes to transform Portugal's under-achieving educational system and create one of Europe's most technologically advanced nations.
