Galveston, Texas, September 24, 2008--Ruben Rosas surveys the aftermath of Hurricane Ike and holds aloft a cross rescued from the rubble of his Galveston apartment.

On September 24, Rosas, 74, and 45,000 other Galveston residents were allowed to return for their first look at the devastation wrought on their barrier island home.

Perhaps 15,000 others rode out the storm on the Texas island. Many still lack power and basic services, and officials continue to warn of mold, vermin, and disease.
