September 23, 2008--The bubble that protects our solar system from cosmic rays, seen in an artist's interpretation of the heliosphere, may be diminished by an unprecedented drop in the sun's power.

The Ulysses spacecraft reports that solar wind, the sun's million miles-per-hour stream of electrons, protons, and other particles, has fallen to the lowest levels ever seen in half a century of reliable scientific observation.

The sun's magnetic field has also weakened at this new nadir for solar activity.
