September 22, 2008--Hurricane Ike swamped the United States' Gulf Coast and unleashed flooding still visible from space when the clouds cleared on September 17--four days after the massive storm came ashore.

NASA's Terra Satellite revealed some 170 miles (275 kilometers) of soggy shoreline stretching from Vermilion Bay, Louisiana, to Galveston Bay, Texas.

Floodwaters, highlighted by a combination of infrared and visible light, can be seen as far as 16 miles (25 kilometers) inland near the Texas/Louisiana border.
