The southern dogfish's choice of coastal living may be its undoing.

Fish trawlers regularly prowl the narrow ribbon of shallow waters off southern Australia, where the newly identified species now clings to life, said fish taxonomist Peter Last.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species lists the fish--a type of gulper shark--as critically endangered.
