Unveiled in September 2008, an Aerosteon dinosaur skull was one piece of a puzzle painstakingly unearthed by Sereno's team beginning in 1996.

Using a microscope and a small vibrating tool, researchers carefully detached the bones from the rock that had helped preserve them, Sereno said.

When researchers were preparing the hipbone, they noticed a crack. Looking inside, they noticed the bone was hollowed out.
