New Orleans, Louisiana, September 1, 2008--New Orleans resident Sarah Salley walks through floodwaters near the city's lakefront during Hurricane Gustav.

Before the storm hit, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation. About two million people left Louisiana, but officials estimate that ten thousand people stayed put in the Big Easy.

Although the levees and floodwalls appear to be holding as of Monday afternoon, the mayor warned residents that heavy wind and rain from Gustav could still spark flooding in the city over the next 24 hours.
