Abensberg, Germany, September 8, 2008--A waitress carries a dozen mugs of beer for thirsty attendees of the Gillamoos folk festival.

Not far away, the world-famous Oktoberfest takes place from September 20 to October 5 in Munich. Some six million people attended the event last year. A liter of beer, like those shown here, will cost about $11 (eight euros) this year.

Oktoberfest started in 1810 to celebrate Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig's marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.
