Sydney, Australia, August 28, 2008—Smile? Mouila, a western lowland gorilla, holds her baby boy Mahale at the Taronga Zoo during his public debut. He was born August 10.

The IUCN lists western lowland gorillas as a critically endangered species. Major threats to the central African natives include hunting, deforestation, and disease such as the Ebola virus.

Mahale, which is Swahili for "event," brings the total number of the gorillas at the Sydney zoo to nine.
