Rio Segundo de Alajuela, Costa Rica, September 26, 2008--Great green macaws, seen here at a captive breeding center, were the subject of a conservation meeting last week in Costa Rica.

The birds are listed as endangered by the IUCN. At the Organization for Tropical Studies meeting, experts said the birds are recovering in protected habitats of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and "Honduras, but face possible extinction in Panama and Ecuador.

Threats include logging and habitat conversion to banana plantations and cattle ranches.
