The bloated Kosi River partially washes away a highway in east Nepal, stranding flood-afflicted villagers and forcing others to brave the waters as they try to escape on August 23, 2008.

The flood occurred when a Nepalese dam on the river burst. The dam, built in the 1950s by India, was only meant to last 20 to 30 years.
