Satellite images show Nepal's Kosi River on August 8, 2008, (right) and nearly a week after a deadly flood began on August 24 (left).

On August 18, the Kosi breached its dam and flowed back into a channel it had abandoned more than 200 years ago.

Normally, the Kosi curves westward out of Nepal in a "c" shape before joining India's Ganga (Ganges) River. During the recent flood, most of the water bypassed this arc and cut south.
