Beijing, China, August 23, 2008--Olympic ideals took a beating when Cuban taekwondo fighter Angel Valodia Matos attacked referee Chakir Chelbat after his over 80-kilogram (176-pound) bronze-medal match.

Matos was disqualified for taking more than the allotted one minute of injury time in the bout. But his indefensible attack on the Swedish official prompted a much harsher sanction--a lifetime ban from the sport.

The World Taekwondo Federation's Yang Jin-suk called the assault ''an insult to mankind.''
