August 26, 2008--Hurricane Gustav gains strength just hours before its expected Haitian landfall.

The Category 1 storm packed maximum sustained winds of 90 miles (150 kilometers) per hour, and was moving at nine miles (15 kilometers) per hour, as of 11 a.m. EDT.

Gustav is expected to shower Hispaniola, eastern Cuba and Jamaica with four to eight inches (20 centimeters) of rain—but up to 20 inches (50 centimeters) may fall in isolated areas.
