Dongtou County, China, July 28, 2008—A seagull soars over heavy surf as Typhoon Fung Wong crashes into Zhejiang province with 74 mile (119 kilometer) per hour winds.

According to Chinese media, more than 750,000 people were evacuated in advance of Fung Wong, the eighth tropical storm to hit China this year.

Heavy rain caused landslides and widespread flooding as the storm rolled inland. Some 106,000 acres (43,000 hectares) of farmland were destroyed. Economic losses exceed U.S. $345 million.
