Pittwater, Australia, August 20, 2008—An abandoned humpback whale calf swims beside a yacht in a harbor north of Sydney, where she has been trying to suckle yachts. (Watch video.)

Fishers and government officials are at a loss about how to save the animal. According to the U.K. newspaper the Independent, a fake teat would have to be stocked with 60 gallons (230 liters) of special milk a day for a year for the calf to survive without a mother. So far, no one is stepping up to that task. Photograph by Daniel Munoz/Reuters
