Weston-Super-Mare, United Kingdom, July 28, 2008—An immense column of smoke billows from the historic Grand Pier as firefighters try unsuccessfully to halt the roaring fire.

The partly wooden pier, a major tourist attraction at the seaside resort in Somerset, was destroyed in less than two hours.

The initial investigation implicates the kitchen's deep-fat fryers as the cause of the fire, according to BBC News.
