Chincoteague, Virginia, July 30, 2008—Wild ponies swim across Assateague Channel during an annual pony swim and auction.

Each year, around 150 of the animals, which live on the Virgina section of Assateague Island, are herded into a three-minute swim to Chincoteague Island, Virginia, where many are auctioned.

The sale of the ponies helps the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company pay for their care and manage the number of wild horses.
