California, United States, July 1, 2008—The Piute wildfire, which covered 11,500 acres (4,650 hectares) on Tuesday, is shown burning rapidly through Sequoia National Forest.

More than 1,400 wildfires continue to burn in drought-stricken central and northern California. Most of the fires were ignited by lightning storms that swept the state two weeks ago, the Associated Press reported.

President George W. Bush declared a state of emergency on Saturday, as many residents evacuated and firefighters continued to battle the blazes.
