Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 27, 2008—A beachgoer makes his way among 4,000 red balloons tethered with string on famed Copacabana beach.

Peace activists orchestrated the eye-catching scene to protest the city's rampant violence. The balloons represent the number of people likely to die between now and year's end, based on murder rates from previous years.

Antonio Costa, head of the Rio de Paz movement, told Reuters TV: "These red balloons represent the lives that are hanging by a thread, waiting for a violent death."
