SPACE PHOTOS THIS WEEK: New Planet, Midnight Mars, More

July 21, 2008—The skies above Beijing, China, appear relatively clear of pollution in this Terra satellite image.

With just weeks to go before the August Olympic Games, Chinese officials have scrambled to put pollution control methods into effect.

The country has banned automobiles on alternate days, halted construction projects, and even shuttered factories. The restrictions, which are scheduled to last two months, are expected to reduce emissions by 60 percent.
