SPACE PHOTOS THIS WEEK: Star Mystery, Mars Rift, More

July 10, 2008—Deep space is ablaze with eight-billion-year-old stars in an image showing the full field of view of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope.

Two swirling galaxies are also visible in the upper left corner of the picture.

Last week astronomers reported that a closer look at the ACS field has revealed a paradox: Stars of three vastly different ages exist in a cluster that should have formed all its stars at about the same time.
