Beijing, China, July 24, 2008—Can you see me now? Thick haze blankets Beijing's National Olympic Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, days before the Summer Games are to begin. (Watch video.)

Chinese officials insist the haze looks worse than it is, suggesting it results from moisture in the air as in a steamy bathroom.

Since July 20 traffic in the capital city has been restricted, and several factories and construction sites have been closed in an effort to reduce pollution.
