Markópoulo, Greece, July 15, 2008—An airborne watertanker drops its fire-fighting payload on a forest fire near Athens, Greece, on Tuesday. Fire fighters struggled to contain the blaze as high winds threatened to drive the flames toward a munitions factory.

Last summer fires fueled by drought and high winds ravaged Greece, claiming 84 lives and destroying some 670,000 acres (270,000 hectares) of farmland, olive groves, and forest.
