Tiachung, Taiwan, July 18, 2008—Rescuers in Taiwan help flood victims after Typhoon Kalmaegi lashed the island nation Thursday night with high winds and heavy rains.

At least 19 people died in the storm, after they were swept away by floodwaters or buried in landslides, according to the state-run China News Daily. "Most of the deaths occurred at the central and southern parts of Taiwan," a Taiwanese fire official said.
